Further to our post in June where we promised to keep you posted on progress…..
With all the paperwork and formalities completed, work got underway on the 5th July.
Unpredictable weather and many people away made it hard to arrange working bees so we worked in pairs and threes when chances came up. So far, we have completed 50 hours of cut and swab treatment on the Italian Buckthorn. Well into the 96 hours we planned for in our grant application. The blue lines on the map show where we have been working.
Our weed contractor has made a first sweep through the previously-treated 3 Hectares and will continue working on the Island in coming months. Parks will be working on African Boxthorn on the Island in the next week or so.
The scripts for the audio guide are coming along nicely and we already have some volunteers and subject experts who have agreed to face the microphone.
Local historian, Christina, has identified the Livingstons after whom the Island was named. Somewhere along the way a spelling mistake snuck in – Livingstone instead of Livingston. So, we may end up with a name change for the Island.

This project is supported by the Victorian Government through the Coastcare Community Grant program.
